Ethan Mollick’s recent essay, On Working with Wizards, captures a shift in how people use advanced AI. Early models felt like coworkers who were transparent enough that you could see the steps, spot errors, and refine together. Today’s frontier models feel different. They are more like wizards: they conjure results that work, but the path they took remains hidden.
This shift raises big questions. Should we care how the “cake” was baked if the cake tastes right? For routine tasks like consolidating invoices or cross-checking payroll, many users say no. They care about accuracy, not process, and once results prove reliable, they stop checking. The productivity gain outweighs the mystery.
But for higher-stakes work the lack of visibility is more troubling.
If AI hides its reasoning, how can new experts learn?
If a wizard solves problems instantly, will people lose the chance to build mastery through trial and error?
And if organizations depend too heavily on a single wizard, what happens when that system drifts or fails?
Some argue the solution lies in building parallel checks. One AI can verify another, tracing sources and flagging inconsistencies. Others suggest a redesign of workflows around AI from the ground up, instead of slotting AI into old human-shaped processes. Either way, the literacy of tomorrow may not be about writing prompts, but about deciding when wizardry is good enough and when transparency still matters.

AI in Hospitals: From Sepsis Detection to Smarter Devices
AI is already cutting mortality rates, speeding up diagnoses, and reshaping how hospitals operate. One standout example is sepsis detection. More than 250,000 people die from sepsis in the U.S. each year, but AI-driven early-warning systems have reduced in-hospital mortality by 18% across a set of dozens of hospitals, by identifying the condition faster than traditional methods.
Radiology is another field seeing rapid transformation. Out of more than 1,200 FDA-approved AI-enabled medical devices, nearly 900 are tied to imaging. These systems can scan CTs, MRIs, and mammograms more comprehensively than human eyes alone, flagging early signs of disease that doctors may miss. Personalized benchmarks allow results to travel with patients, improving care even when they move between providers or countries.
Other breakthroughs highlight AI’s reach. NICU systems can detect pain in premature babies too weak to cry by analyzing micro-expressions and body movements. Cardiology devices using AI to optimize pacemakers and heart pumps are available, and surgery is being reshaped, with robotic systems reducing complications and shortening recovery times.
Behind these advances is a regulatory shift. The FDA’s new Predetermined Change Control Plan (PCCP) allows approved devices to update their AI models without restarting years-long trials. This keeps systems safe while letting them evolve as algorithms improve. For example, AI anesthesia monitors and neurology platforms can gain updates that improve accuracy without lengthy approval delays. Even The UK and EU are moving in similar directions, signaling a global trend toward balancing innovation and oversight to allow for continuous improvements.

Robots, Chips, and the Next Industrial Platform
Meta’s AI ambitions are extending into robotics. The company recently hired the former head of Tesla’s Optimus project, signaling a push beyond glasses and wearables into embodied AI. At the same time, Figure announced a partnership with Brookfield to train humanoid robots inside residential and commercial properties, giving them real-world practice in navigation and task execution. For residents, this could eventually mean robots that handle chores, deliveries, and even customer interactions in showrooms.
The momentum is not limited to startups and platforms. Nvidia has deepened its role in the future embodied AI robotics stack by investing $5 billion into Intel, acquiring a stake while also partnering to collaborate on CPU-GPU system-on-chip designs optimized for AI. This positions Intel to challenge AMD while securing Nvidia’s access to critical foundry capacity that Intel owns. With TSMC concentrated in Taiwan amid rising geopolitical tension just across the Taiwan Strait, diversifying supply chains for AI is not just good strategy, it is about survival.
Together, these moves point toward a world where robotics may become as common a household investment as cars were in the last century. The foundation is being laid in both hardware and software, from humanoid training grounds to efficient chips that will power the next wave of machines. The question is less whether robots arrive, and more how quickly society will adapt to their presence in daily life.

Did you know?
A WhatsApp-based AI advisor called Ulangizi, which means “advisor” in Chichewa, gives smallholder farmers in Malawi instant, local-language farming help via text, voice, or a photo of a sick crop. The tool replies in Chichewa or English, can transcribe spoken questions, and can analyze photos to identify likely pests or diseases.
Ulangizi was developed by Opportunity International with partners and runs on Microsoft Azure, pulling guidance from Malawi’s Ministry of Agriculture so answers align with official recommendations. The system is designed to be used alongside human “farmer support agents,” who bring the app to farmers without phones or help interpret answers when connectivity and literacy get in the way.
The human impact is already clear in local reporting: after Cyclone Freddy devastated fields, at least one farmer switched part of his land to potatoes on the app’s advice and earned roughly $800 in sales, enough to cover school fees for his children. The Malawian government has signaled support for the project, while implementers note scaling still faces real limits from spotty connectivity and device access.

The AI Orchestrator Conundrum
A new kind of expert is rising, the orchestrator, who pairs human judgment with opaque AI systems to solve problems no one person could handle alone. Picture a junior surgeon who follows a model’s multi-step plan and saves a patient. Later a court asks the surgeon to explain the decision. The hospital shows a certification badge and a detailed log, but no plain-language rationale. That badge, meant to signal trust, also opens doors to budgets, patients, and influence.
The conundrum
If real expertise becomes the skill of orchestrating opaque AIs, who should decide who qualifies as an expert orchestrator? Governments, professional boards, big platforms, decentralized reputation systems, or some hybrid of these seem sensible authorities. But each choice forces a trade-off: some choices boost safety and clear accountability but move slowly and invite capture of the technology, while others speed up delivery of tech benefits and broaden reach, but can concentrate power and create new inequalities.
There is no neutral option, only which set of permanent gains and losses we accept.

YouTube Rolls Out Likeness Detection, Auto Dubbing, and A/B Testing Features
